Though staffing numbers are down, language student figures in Canada are increasing after falling by nearly 100,000 last year, from a 2018 high of nearly 160,000 students.
A successful 2017 for UK ELT made for widespread optimism at the English UK Academic Conference, with the industry now looking positively to the future after the 2015-2016 slump. "It’s been a much better year for UK ELT, there are lots of reasons to be optimistic," said Sarah Cooper of English UK.
The UK maintained a leading position in the global ELT market in 2014, but is losing market share as it faces increasing competition from other destinations, according to English UK’s annual statistics report.
